Shanahan

Brendan Shanahan, President and Alternate Governor, Toronto Maple Leafs

Brendan Shanahan was born and raised in the west side of Toronto in Mimico, Ontario.

Mr. Shanahan spent two years with the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League before being drafted with the second overall pick by the New Jersey Devils in 1987. He played 21 seasons in the NHL with the Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers.

Over the course of his career Mr. Shanahan won three Stanley Cup Championships. He also won an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship gold medal and a Canada Cup title as a member of Team Canada.

Mr. Shanahan was awarded the NHL’s King Clancy Memorial trophy in 2003, and in 2013, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

After retiring at age 40, Mr. Shanahan spent five years working at the League office in New York City, initially as Vice President of Hockey and Business Development and later as Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations. At the end of the 2013-14 season, he accepted the role of President and Alternate Governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Andrew Coyne

Andrew Coyne is a political columnist for the Postmedia chain of newspapers. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics‎. He has written previously for Maclean’s and The Globe and Mail, contributing as well to several other publications in Canada and abroad, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, National Review, and The Walrus. He is the winner of two National Newspaper Awards and the Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism.

A National Post original, Mr. Coyne’s journalism career has also included positions with Maclean’s, the Globe and Mail and the Southam newspaper chain. He has been a regular contributor to CBC’s The National’s At Issue panel since 2005.

He is a former two-term president of the Canadian Association for Business Economics and holds a graduate degree in economics from the University of Toronto.

Derek Burleton

Derek Burleton is Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist for TD Bank Group. In his role, he leads a team of economists that provides leading analysis on the Canadian and U.S. economies. Each year, he travels extensively across the Canada and the U.S., speaking at more than 75 events on economic and financial developments.

As a respected commentator, Mr. Burleton has been quoted by many media outlets – including the London Financial Times and the Economist. He also is frequently interviewed on the radio and television.

Mr. Burleton maintains a strong interest in public policy issues, and has written substantive reports on health care sustainability, education and immigration reform.

He participates in a number of advisory and steering committees both internal and external to TD Bank Group and currently serves on the Board of the Toronto Association of Business Economists (TABE).

Mr. Burleton received his Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University and an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics. He has more than 20 years of experience as an economist in the financial industry.


Warren Ritchie, PhD

In a 35-year career to date, Dr. Warren Ritchie has proven to be an expert in leading corporation transformation. He has worked in the private sector, the public sector and academia.

Dr. Ritchie has held leadership positions for the Volkswagen Group of Companies in Canada, the United States, and Argentina. His automotive OEM experience spans functional areas of Strategy, Marketing, Finance, Sales, and Information Technology.

Today, Dr. Ritchie is the Research Fellow for CGS Advisors, where his current research and consulting interests include sustainable development, industry disruption and organizational transformation.

He holds a BA from Queen’s University, an MBA from Dalhousie University, and a PhD from the University of North Carolina.


Robert E. Karwel

Robert Karwel is Senior Manager of Automotive Practice in Canada, responsible for management of the Power Information Network® (PIN) data system. PIN Explorer is the leading vehicle transaction database system in Canada, which is used by the OEMs and dealers to help manage vehicle sales performance.

Mr. Karwel joined J.D. Power in 2014. He brings with him over a decade of experience within the Canadian auto industry working in Product Planning, Incentive Planning and Market research roles at Nissan Canada and Infiniti Canada, and working with GM Canada’s agency partner on Market research. Before that, Robert has also worked on Bay Street in the Financial industry at CIBC Mellon Global Securities, and at Daimler Chrysler Financial.

Mr. Karwel has an honours degree in Economics from the University of Toronto.

Shahin Alizadeh

Shahin Alizadeh attended York University from 1971-1975 and worked part time at Toronto car dealerships during the summer months before entering the car business full time in 1975.

He worked his way up to sales management at Pine Tree Lincoln Mercury, and then moved to Don Robertson Chrysler.

In 1980, Mr. Alizadeh co-founded Town and Country BMW- Mazda and Westowne Mazda as the operating partner/dealer principal. He sold both dealerships in 1990 and started the Downtown Automotive Group (DAG) in 1991, beginning with Downtown Mazda, Downtown Saturn Saab Isuzu, and King Toyota.

Since then, DAG has grown to 11 dealerships and over 400 employees. DAG currently operates Downtown Toyota, Toyota on Front, Lexus Downtown, Infiniti Downtown, Nissan Downtown, Downtown Ford, Downtown Lincoln, Downtown Hyundai, Genesis Downtown, Avenue Nissan and Downtown Jeep/Dodge Chrysler.

Mr. Alizadeh has served as President, and as a board member of the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association, as well as on a number of automotive-related boards.

Jim McManes

Before attending university, Jim McManes sold cars for a dealership in Brandon, MB. He continued to buy and sell used cars to finance his way through school. Mr. McManes has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandon University, and a Bachelor of Laws and Letters degree from the University of Manitoba.

Mr. McManes practised law in Brandon for two years before relocating to Calgary and entering the automotive business. He worked for seven years as a Sales Manager at Southgate Chev Olds in Calgary before buying his first dealership, Eastside Dodge, in 1987.

Since becoming a dealer, Mr. McManes has had an eye on expansion, and today, the McManes Automotive Group operates 19 new car dealerships from Winnipeg to Vancouver. They sell approximately 25,000 new and used vehicles a year, have surpassed $1 billion in revenue and have more than 1,300 employees. Mr. McManes is proud to have his son Michael with him in the business.

Mr. Hairabedian is leading the transformation of HGreg.com/HGregoire to an omni-channel technology company. Its web and digital platforms are now acting as the #1 sales pipeline, lead generator and user-intuitive service tools for millennial buyers and tech-forward consumers.

He has spearheaded “concierge-like” efforts that help out-of-town buyers explore, research and conclude sales transactions while being treated to valet pick up, hotel accommodations and test drives – simplifying the purchasing experience and leading to "wow!" moments.

During his tenure, the company has expanded into new markets in several municipalities in Florida and has grown to a network of 22 new and pre-owned car dealerships in Canada and the U.S.

Mr. Hairabedian believes strongly in giving back to the community, and the company is an annual/regular supporter of environmental initiatives (tree planting), safe driving initiatives, Broward Community & Family Health Centers and Children’s Hospitals.

À la fin de la saison 2013-2014, il a accepté le poste de président et gouverneur suppléant des Maple Leafs de Toronto.

Durant ses 35 années de carrière, le Dr Warren Ritchie a fait ses preuves comme expert en transformation de sociétés. Il a travaillé dans le secteur privé, le secteur public et le milieu universitaire.

Jim McManes

Avant d’entrer à l’université, Jim McManes vendait des véhicules pour une concession de Brandon, au Manitoba. Il a continué d’acheter et de vendre des voitures d’occasion pour financer ses études. M. McManes a obtenu un baccalauréat en arts de l’université Brandon et un baccalauréat en droit et lettres de l’université du Manitoba.

M. McManes a pratiqué le droit à Brandon pendant deux ans avant de déménager à Calgary et de se lancer dans le commerce automobile. Il a passé sept ans à la tête du service des ventes de Southgate Chev Olds, à Calgary, puis a acheté sa propre concession, Eastside Dodge, en 1987.

Depuis qu’il est devenu concessionnaire, M. McManes a des projets d’expansion. Aujourd’hui, le McManes Automotive Group exploite 19 concessions de véhicules neufs de Winnipeg à Vancouver. Elles vendent environ 25 000 véhicules neufs et d’occasion par année, leur chiffre d’affaires a dépassé le milliard de dollars et elles emploient plus de 1 300 personnes. M.
